Chapter 22: New Vision
Alex knelt in the snow outside of the house and put the finishing touches on a snowman. He glanced back once and saw Elaine sitting on the step, smiling at him.
Alex grinned back at her, waved, and then returned to his snow sculpture.
Despite the cold, there was a warm, happy sensation in his stomach. The loss of Jeannette had been difficult, but Elaineâs absence had been terrible.
He shuddered at the memory of it, and winced at the pain Marcus had suffered confronting the newest ghost. Marcusâ chest bore a large bruise. Alex rubbed his own chest as he thought about it. The burn from Jeannetteâs dog tags was still healing, leaving behind a large and disturbingly smooth scar in its wake.
Behind him, the door opened, and Alex caught the faint odor of pipe tobacco.
Thoughts of Jeannette drifted away, and he smiled. Without looking, Alex called over his shoulder, âGood morning, Marcus.â
The older manâs chuckle greeted him.
âNow,â Marcus said, âI know you had a fifty-fifty chance of guessing that it was either myself or Joyce. Somehow, I doubt it was a guess.â
âYour pipe tobacco,â Alex said in response.
Marcusâ laughter rang out across the snow-covered landscape.
âWell done, Alex, well done,â Marcus said. A sober tone entered his voice as he said, âYou shouldnât be out here alone.â
âIâm not,â Alex said. âElaine is here with me. So is Brother Michel.â
Alex gestured to the left, where the brother sat in the snow, watching several birds soar with their wings spread wide to the cold air.
âWhere?â Marcus asked softly. âI do not see him, or her, for that matter.â
Frowning, Alex turned and said, âSheâs right by your left foot.â
The dead woman shimmered, and Marcusâ eyes went wide. He took the pipe stem out of his mouth, looked to Alex and said, âTruly, Alex, I did not see her until just now. I still do not see the good brother.â
Alex shook his head, confused, and then stood up.
âBrother Michel!â Alex called, waving. The brother looked up, smiled his bloody smile and returned the wave before he went back to contemplating the birdsâ flight.
âI still donât see him,â Marcus murmured, âbut I trust he is there.â
The older man fixed a curious gaze upon Alex. Finally, Marcus smiled and said gently, âOh, Alex, I do believe there may be something truly exceptional about you.â
âWhat?â Alex asked shyly.
âLater,â Marcus said. âI must think on how to phrase it. If you are quite finished with your snowman, who looks like a rather fat version of myself, I think you should come in and warm up. Youâve been out here for some time, and I believe your nose would give Rudolphâs a run for his money.â
Laughing, Alex nodded and hurried to the comfort of his home.
